Founded by Emperor
Shah Jahan in 1639 and served Mughals for nearly 200 years as main residence of
Mughal dynasty. Red Fort is most visited
historic site of Delhi and designated a UNESCO world Heritage Site in 2007. Red

Construction
of Red Fort was commissioned by fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan on 12 May 1638 and
took almost 9 years. Red Fort is designed
by Ustad Ahmad Lahori and was planned according to Islamic prototypes.
Each block contains architectural elements typical of Mughal buildings that
reflect a fusion of Persian, Timurid and Hindu traditions.
The Red Fort spread in area of 254.67 acres enclosed by 2.41
kilometres long and 18 metres high defensive walls on the river side to 33
metres on the city side.
Present days every year on the Independence Day of India,
the Prime Minister hoists the Indian tricolour flag at the main gate of the
fort and delivers a nationally broadcast speech from its ramparts.
